Digitalization is becoming more and more important. In some cases, it is the only way out or the only option - especially in times of the Covid-19 pandemic. This is also reflected in the funding offerings of the Austrian government. Fundings for digitalization are being launched, renewed, improved or adapted. There are a variety of funding opportunities available for Austrian companies, which can be a great help in covering costs or making investments. However, it can be a bit confusing with the various funding agencies and types of fundings. To best support you in your digitalization projects, we have researched and summarized all the fundings available for companies in the field of digitalization.

Below you will find a structured overview of the nationwide fundings, as well as the fundings in Tyrol and Vienna. The list for Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Carinthia, Vorarlberg and Burgenland will follow shortly.

Nationwide funding opportunities

The Austrian Federal Economic Chamber provides information on nationwide funding opportunities through its "Find Funding" service. Here, you can systematically search for all business support schemes nationwide, as well as by individual federal state, according to thematic priorities, industry, location or type of funding.

Below is an overview of all current nationwide funding opportunities for companies in the field of digitalisation.

KMU Digital 3.0 (Attention: limited funding budget, premature termination likely)

WHO is funded: Austrian small businesses and SMEs

WHAT is funded:

  • Costs for the analysis and consultation of digitalisation projects

  • Costs for the implementation of digitalisation projects

HOW MUCH is funded:

Consultation:

  • Status and potential analysis: 80% funding for half a day (max. €400 excl. VAT)

  • Strategy consultation: 50% funding for a two-day consultation (max. €1,000 for at least 16 hours of consultation)

Implementation:

  • The funding amounts to a maximum of 30% of the eligible costs (maximum funding €6,000)

  • Projects with eligible costs of at least €3,000 up to a maximum of €30,000 can be funded.

WHEN is the submission period: Valid until 30.06.2025

WHO is being funded: Companies in the field of goods production or production-related services, as well as all industries in the special condition "Digitalization Tyrol".

WHAT is being funded:

Costs for the digitalization of business processes and the development of digital business models, especially personnel costs, training costs, material costs, third-party costs, such as software development.

HOW MUCH is being funded:

Up to €500,000 for digitalization projects. Non-repayable subsidy.

Fundings in Tyrol

The Tyrol region provides information on all available economic support programs on its website tirol.gv.at, including specific funding opportunities for technology, innovation, and digitalization.

Here is an overview of all current funding opportunities for companies in Tyrol in the field of digitalization:

Tyrol Digitalization Funding / Tiroler Digitalisierungsförderung

WHO is funded: Tyrolean companies with a valid business license and at least 5 years of operating history (exceptions apply if no business regulation exists)

WHAT is funded:

  • Planning, analysis, and conception (Module 1) for digitalization projects

  • Investment in activated systems (Module 2) for digitalization projects

  • Training and qualification measures (Module 3) for digitalization projects

HOW MUCH is funded:

  • Module 1: up to 50% of eligible costs (up to a maximum of €50,000; eligible project costs must be at least €10,000)

  • Module 2: 10% to 20% of eligible costs (up to a maximum of €75,000; eligible project costs must be at least €50,000)

  • Module 3: up to 50% of eligible costs (up to a maximum of €25,000; eligible project costs must be at least €10,000)

  • A total of up to €150,000 for all 3 modules

  • Non-repayable grant

digital.tirol - SME Funding

WHO is eligible: Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the commercial sector with a business location in Tyrol and a valid business license (exceptions for those without a trade regulation)

WHAT is funded:

  • Planning, design and preparation of digitalization projects

  • Implementation investments in software and hardware, such as ERP systems, technical interfaces and connections, digital communication systems, and more complex e-commerce solutions

HOW MUCH is funded:

  • Planning: up to 50% of eligible costs (the eligible project costs must be at least €1,000; the maximum assessment basis is €10,000)

  • Implementation: 10% to 20% of eligible costs (the eligible project costs must be at least €10,000; the maximum assessment basis is €100,000)

  • Non-repayable grant

WHEN is the submission period: Ongoing until December 31, 2022

Lighthouse Projects in the field of digitalization

WHO is eligible: Private individuals, sole proprietorships, registered individual and capital companies, cooperatives, associations, joint associations, municipalities, municipal associations, tourism associations, and universities with headquarters in the federal state of Tyrol.

WHAT is funded: Lighthouse projects in the field of digital transformation - that is, unique projects in the context of digitization that have special significance for a specific region or have a supra-regional claim and have a positive influence on the development of the economic, labor, and living space of Tyrol.

HOW MUCH is funded:

  • Up to 100% of the eligible costs (For companies, the funding rate is limited to 30%; the maximum funding limit is €500,000)

  • The maximum funding per project is €200,000

  • Non-repayable grant

WHEN is the application deadline: Ongoing until September 30, 2022.

Tiroler Beratungsförderung / Tirol Consultancy Funding

WHO is supported: All companies in the commercial sector, regardless of their size, who hold a valid business license (exceptions are made for those not subject to the trade regulations).

WHAT is supported: External consultancy services, including but not limited to: business consulting, innovation and technology consulting, digitization, and COVID-19-related business consulting.

HOW MUCH is supported:

  • Up to 50% to 80% of eligible costs depending on the focus of the consulting services

  • Non-repayable grant

Fundings in Vienna

The Vienna Business Agency provides information on funding opportunities in the federal capital of Vienna through its funding directory. Here, you can systematically search for all funding opportunities for Viennese companies by type of business and focus area.

Below you will find an overview of all current funding opportunities for Viennese companies in the field of digitalization.

Funding for sole proprietorships (EPU)

WHO is funded: Sole proprietorships that have been in existence for at least six months before the application (max. one marginal employment relationship at the time of application).

WHAT is funded:

Projects that aim to make a significant change in the company due to the corona crisis and show a plausible solution approach for this. This can include, for example, a realignment or significant adaptation of the business model, the development of new customer groups, the establishment of new products and/or services, or the opening up of new distribution channels or markets. In particular:

  • Acquired services

  • Project-related investments

  • Personnel costs

HOW MUCH is funded:

  • 60% max. funding amount;

  • 10,000 euros per company;

  • Minimum project size: 1,000 euros;

  • max. project duration: 1 year

WHEN is the submission period: from 01.01.2022 to 31.12.2022

Wien Digital

WHO is supported: Small and medium-sized enterprises that have been active in Vienna for at least one year.

WHAT is supported: Implementation of digitization projects or ideas for optimizing business processes, in particular costs for hardware and software as well as for external services.

HOW MUCH is funded:

  • 30% of eligible costs (eligible project costs must be at least €10,000 and must not exceed €40,000)

  • Non-repayable grant

WHEN is the application period: Ongoing until December 31, 2023 (Attention: next deadline is August 31, 2022; further deadlines: November 30, 2022)

Nahversorgung und Digitalisierung / Local Supply and Digitalization

WHO is being funded: Micro-enterprises with fewer than 10 employees as well as founders and entrepreneurs in Vienna.

WHAT is being funded: Digitalization measures for local supply companies, particularly investments in equipment and machinery, construction measures, material and equipment costs, intangible assets, and external services.

HOW MUCH is being funded:

  • 50% of the costs for digitalization measures (eligible project costs must be at least €5,000; maximum funding amount per year: €10,000)

  • Non-repayable grant

WHEN is the application period: until December 31, 2023.

Creative_to market

WHO is supported: Startups, small, medium and large enterprises in Vienna in the creative industry.

WHAT is supported: (Digital) marketing and sales measures for existing companies in the creative industry, especially personnel costs, purchased services, consulting costs, qualification costs, travel costs.

HOW MUCH is funded:

  • 50% of the costs for (digital) marketing and sales measures (the eligible project costs must be at least €5,000; maximum funding amount: €50,000) (!)

  • Women's bonus: €2,000

  • Non-repayable grant

WHEN is the application period: Ongoing until December 31, 2022 (Attention: next deadline on July 31, 2022; others: November 30, 2022)

Fundings in Salzburg

Digi-Start

WHO is supported: Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) as well as Salzburg MidCaps to provide special support for small and medium-sized businesses and to strengthen smaller locations of larger companies in Salzburg.

WHAT is supported: Digitalization projects in companies with a concrete implementation reference. In particular, projects for the development, introduction, or improvement of processes, technologies, procedures, and prototyping methods, business models, products, and services as well as the intended use of data and data integration in parts or along the entire value chain.

HOW MUCH is funded: min. 5,000 euros to max. 15,000 euros; up to 50% of eligible total costs (max. € 7,500).

WHEN is the submission period: until December 31, 2022

Digi-Commerce

WHO is supported: Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) as well as Salzburg MidCaps to provide special support for small and medium-sized businesses and to strengthen smaller locations of larger companies in Salzburg.

WHAT is supported: The establishment and implementation of digital e-commerce solutions in areas where no digital solutions have been used before and the expansion of existing e-commerce solutions with technically demanding functionalities. Standard websites or webshops and standard e-commerce solutions are not covered by the funding.

HOW MUCH is funded: min. 2,000 to max. 30,000 euros; up to 30% of eligible total costs (max. 9,000 euros).

WHEN is the submission period: until December 31, 2022

Digi-Invest

WHO is supported: Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) as well as Salzburg MidCaps to provide special support for small and medium-sized businesses and to strengthen smaller locations of larger companies in Salzburg.

WHAT is supported: Implementation projects with a higher innovation and investment scope, implementation of Industry 4.0 concepts or steps with a higher acquisition, development, and technology cost share.

HOW MUCH is funded: 15,000 to 100,000 euros; up to 30% of eligible total costs (max. 30,000 euros).

WHEN is the submission period: until December 31, 2022

Digi-Bonus

WHO is supported: Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) as well as Salzburg MidCaps to provide special support for small and medium-sized businesses and to strengthen smaller locations of larger companies in Salzburg.

WHAT is supported: Implementation of larger investment projects that are eligible for funding under the ERP program (AWS federal program with interest-subsidized ERP loans, not ERP small loans) and deal with the introduction of aspects of digital transformation in the manufacturing sector or Industry 4.0 solutions.

HOW MUCH is funded: up to 1 million euros; up to 10% of eligible total costs (max. 100,000 euros).

WHEN is the submission period: until December 31, 2022.
